3 Gutter Cleaning Mistakes to Avoid

The start of a new year is a great time to set new goals for ourselves. But sometimes, it’s the little things we do every day that can have the biggest impact on our lives. This is true for gutter cleaning as well. Make sure your gutters won’t have any problems in 2022 by avoiding the following:

Ladder positioned incorrectly
When cleaning the gutters you will probably need a ladder. To avoid any accidents you should always properly position the ladder. Whenever possible, the ladder should be on even ground that is solid. Avoid slippery surfaces, such as marble or paved rocks. For every 4 feet that the ladder goes in the air you should slide it 1 foot on the ground away from the structure. You can also secure it from moving by having someone step on the feet or placing it against an immovable object such, as a small wall or curb. Source: DoItYourself

No gutter guards installed
Make cleaning easier by preventing debris from clogging up your gutters in the first place. Often made of perforated metal or mesh, gutter guards catch leaves, tree droppings, and other debris while allowing water to flow freely through your home’s drainage system. If you live in an area with a lot of trees, or if you tend to neglect gutter cleaning, gutter guards can be a worthwhile investment that protects your home for the long run. Source: BHG

Conduct a thorough inspection
Picture this: You’ve gone through the trouble of getting out the ladder, dragging out the hose, and even dug out your trusty trowel to get the job done. You might be in a rush to cross gutter cleaning off your to-do list, but it’s better that you take your time and pay close attention to the state of your gutters beyond just the gunk that’s piled up in them.

The last thing you want to do is break out the ladder a few weeks after cleaning because of a stubborn leak that reappeared. Instead, use the time that you’ve already accounted for to double-check for any indications of wear and tear. Keep an eye out for any cracks in the gutters, which may be a warning sign for the state of your foundation down the line. Source: HouseDigest
