Here are a few signs to look out for:

The presence of molds and mildews
Indoor mold has been linked to a wide variety of serious health problems including respiratory tract infections, asthma, pneumonia, and certain forms of cancer.

At least once every few months, you should look over every inch of your home to see if there are any signs of mold or mildew. A leaking roof will often result in mold outbreaks around the vents, ceiling fans and light fixtures. Source: TodaysHomeowner

Bubbled ceiling paint
Interior latex paint is sturdy enough to hold in water, much like a balloon. So, the water passes through the ceiling drywall or plaster and is held back by the paint layer.

Musty water
The leaking water is often dark-colored and it will stain white or light ceilings or walls. It may smell mildewy or even rancid. Or, the water might be clear and odor-free. Source: TheSpruce

Curling or blistering
On a flat roof, the most common sign of a leak is blistering or wrinkling. You will notice serious creases or curled and wrinkled sections on your roof. These are signs that water is getting in under some of the layers of the roofing and then heating up and expanding. The issue has to be resolved fast or water will make it all the way through your roofing. Source: Modernize

Damaged flashing
Cracks, tears, and holes in the flashing material are all likely suspects. Also, check for places where leaves and twigs may have built up and prevented water from draining away. It’s also a good time to assess the general health of the roof. Leaks can often be symptomatic of an old roof that needs to be replaced. Source: ThisOldHouse
