3 Common Chimney Problems

Chimney problems can range from a minor inconvenience to a major expense, or even a serious health concern. Check out these common chimney problems to diagnose the likely issue your chimney is having.

Below are 3 common chimney problems:

Creosote
One of the most common chimney problems is the build-up of creosote on the inner walls of the chimney. Creosote is a sticky, odorous substance that forms when the gases from wood burning combine and cool in the chimney. Creosote deposits are particularly common with airtight wood burning stoves and fireplaces, which produce cooler temperatures in the chimney. If not prevented or treated, creosote builds upon itself and causes chimney narrowing and various other chimney problems, including unpleasant smells, corrosion of the chimney walls, and chimney fires. Animals and Rain
Birds, squirrels, or raccoons, among other animals, get in the chimney and cause issues inside that include smells, noises, blockages, and even fires. Chimney caps with spark arrestors prevent animals from entering the space and nesting.
Moisture will cause rust, odors, and leaks, and during freeze-thaw cycles it can cause cracking in the chimney’s mortar over time. Chimney caps keep rainwater from collecting in the chimney. Source:  BestPickReports

Settlements
Masonry chimneys are topped by what we call “chimney crowns,” which seal your chimney from the edge of the flue liner to the edge of the chimney. Lots of crowns are built using a common mortar mix that tends to crack and chip over time, which in turn allows water into the chimney and begins to erode nearby brick and mortar. Most crowns can be made to be watertight once more, though in some cases a crown may need to be rebuilt entirely. Source:  Magic-Sweep
