Kerrisdale Roofing and Drains ltd has been servicing the lower mainland for over 40 years in the chimney business. Because we do roofing we see a large amount of chimneys that need repaired or to be rebuilt.
If you use gas in your furnace or hot water heater there is a very good chance you will need a metal liner in your chimney. Natural gas turns the mortal in between the bricks into sand. If you have a cement brick chimney not a clay brick chimney, it will also eat away at the bricks and turn them back to sand. With a liner the chimney only acts as a casing for the liner. The chimney above the roof should be rebuilt if it is in vary bad shape. If it is not to bad, it can be pointed with new mortar.
This Chimney Vancouver service process is as follows: We relay any loose bricks on top of the chimney and grind all mortar joints to a depth of approx. 1″ deep. We then fill all the joints with new mortar. When the chimney is all grouted we pressure point the chimney to properly pack the mortar. When we finish this process we install a new cement collar around the top of the bricks.
The next step is to replace the flashing if it is needed or reseal the existing flashing as it may be set between the bricks and in good shape as it does not get a lot of ware.
The last step is to water proof its chimney with silicone water repellent. Vancouver chimney’s are at risk of deterioration because of all the rain
and the cold weather, the wet mortar will freeze and crack the bricks. This allows water to seep into the chimney.
