What is Standing Seam Metal?
Standing seam metal roofs are made of metal panels that run from the top of the roof to the eaves. Each panel has a high lip or rib on each side. The ribs overlap and fit together, concealing the fasteners and creating raised seams that run from top to bottom.

Standing seam metal roofs aren’t new: This style of metal roofing was used as early as the mid 1700s. It became more prevalent in the mid 1800s when copper was more readily available. Today, the most common metals used are steel, aluminum, and copper–which is the most expensive. Source: Gardenista

Elements
– Seam fasteners:
These seam fasteners might be anywhere from 0.5 inches to 1.5 inches high. Because these fasteners are concealed, you only see a smooth continuous ridge extending from top to bottom.
– Pre-formed vs. site-formed: Roof panels can come either pre-formed or site-formed. Pre-formed panels are created in an off-site factory. Site-formed panels are created from rolls of metal that are run through mobile forming machines that crimp the metal into rigid panels.
– Composition and width of panels: Panels tend to run 12 to 19 inches wide. Panels are usually made either of Galvalume-coated steel or aluminum. Source: TheSpruce

Types
There are 3 types of standing seam metal roofs which offer different benefits as discussed below.

– Painted Aluminum Standing Seam Roofs
Aluminum is the most affordable standing seam roofing material. It may dent more easily than steel, but it offers quality corrosion resistance and can be painted in a variety of colors, which can allow for a more congruent aesthetic on any type of home which makes it a popular choice for standing seam metal roofing.
Galvalume Steel Standing Seam Roofs
Galvalume steel roofs have a corrosion-proof coating of zinc aluminum alloy, this type of coating is as tough as steel and as resistant to corrosion as aluminum. It tends to be the most expensive type of standing seam roofing material you can have installed.
Galvanized Steel Standing Seam Roof
A galvanized steel roof also referred to as a G-90 standing seam roof is zinc-coated steel roof that is one of the most common materials used for standing seam roofing. The steel is strong and provides durability, while the zinc coating protects against corrosion. Source: Modernize
