Signs That You Have Water Damage on Your Roof

When you’re using a high-quality roof and it’s been properly installed, there’s no doubt that it will protect your household from the harsh effects brought upon by the weather.

Through the years, it will sustain damage and will eventually start showing signs that it needs an urgent repair. If this is left unchecked, not only will your roof perish but also other areas of your home could as well.

Damaged Roof

So, before things can get any worse, you should do an annual inspection of your roof. Other than that, make sure to also be worried when you start seeing these water damage signs:

1. Damaged or Missing Flashing

If you spot damaged or missing metal flashing around the edges of your vents, roof, or chimney, water can leak into your home. If your step flashing rusts or becomes loose, water seeps inside.

Damaged flashing is often due to drying and cracking, storms, and high winds. You can sometimes do a roof repair on these spots without replacing your entire roof, but you’ll want an expert to take a look.

“Chimneys are a very common source for roof leaks; I would definitely recommend hiring a professional to redo the flashing if that is the leak source,” says Feller. “Ensure the contractor you choose is knowledgeable on flashing repairs and provides a warranty for the work.”

2. Puddle of Water

If you notice pools of water on your roof, it’s worth having a roofing expert check it out. If you have a flat roof especially, water can sometimes create puddles in certain areas.

Watch for leaks by looking inside your home near where the puddle of water is located. Take a close look around the potential problem area, as the leak might not occur directly below the pool of water. Source: Angi

3. Mold Along the Corners, Ceilings and Walls

Mold is of course a clear sign of a moisture problem and can become an issue within just 48 hours when the right amount of water and humidity is mixed together. The fungus can be a serious health issue for those who live in the home and should be seen to while the source of the roof and interior ceiling water damage is taken care of a by a professional roofing repair company.

4. Swollen Walls/Ceilings/Door Casings

Another sign of roof water damage is when the parts of the interior of the home begin to swell up due to a collection of moisture into the wood. Bubbled walls, doors that have trouble closing and so forth can indicate a water leak that needs to be taken care of immediately. Source: HRI

5. Sagging or discolored roof decking

When water seeps through the roof and reaches the underlying decking, it can cause the wood to become discolored or sag. If you have access to your attic, inspect the roof decking for any signs of water damage. Look for areas that appear darker or feel damp to the touch. Sagging or warped decking suggests long-term water exposure and requires immediate attention.

6.Rising energy bills

An unexplained spike in your energy bills could be an indirect sign of a leaking roof. When water infiltrates your home, it compromises the insulation, making it less effective in regulating temperature. As a result, your heating or cooling systems may have to work harder, leading to increased energy consumption. If you notice a sudden increase in your energy bills without any other plausible explanation, it’s worth investigating for a potential roof leak. Source: Cavalry Construction & Restoration
