Install safety devices
Install a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector before you use your fireplace. This will alert you if excessive smoke builds up or if carbon monoxide, an invisible, dangerous gas, is present. Install a fire extinguisher close by in case of emergency. Source: HomeGuides.SFGate

Cover your chimney with a cap
Use a wire-mesh cap to cover the top of the chimney to keep birds, squirrels, rain and other debris from entering. The last thing you want while working your fireplace is to find some deceased animals coming down the flue. Caps can deteriorate over time, so be prepared to replace your rain cap if it’s corroded or been damaged by weather. Source: FamilyHandyman

Get rid of excess debris
If the fireplace has been used before, remove excess ash and soot. Use a metal bucket to avoid accidental fires. Open your air control or dampener to allow air to flow through the chimney. Refer to your fireplace model for more information on the air flow system it is equipped with.

Have an open hearth fireplace? Common in historic properties or homes with a traditional heat source, open hearth fireplaces usually do no have a glass door and have no air flow control. The flue remains open at all times.

Check the flue before each fire by rolling a lit sheet of newspaper inside your fireplace. Note how the wind is moving. If the smoke if moving up through the fireplace, the flue is open. If the smoke is flowing into the room, the flue may be closed or clogged.

Chimneys need to be cleaned at least once a year by a licensed professional. If you believe your fireplace is clogged, do not light a fire until you have had it re-inspected. Source: HouseBeautiful
