Attic ventilation is an often overlooked but extremely important component of a well-functioning home. Read on to know more about its different types and benefits.

Benefits of well-ventilated attic

1. It prevents mildew growth and rot on your roof’s framing and sheathing by reducing moisture buildup.
2. It helps prevent ice dams in winter by keeping your roof colder.
3. It extends the life of your shingles by keeping the roof cooler in hot weather. (The manufacturer’s shingle warranty usually requires ventilation.)
4. It reduces cooling costs in the warm season. The savings will be slight if you have a well-insulated attic space; greater if you have little insulation. Source: FamilyHandyman

Types of attic ventilation
There are two main categories of attic ventilation your roofing company can employ to improve your attic: natural and mechanical.

1. Natural
Achieve natural ventilation by getting air to flow through the vents and fans in the roof and eaves. Ridge vents and soffit vents allow air to flow through the attic instead of being trapped. Wind turbines catch the wind and replace hot air inside the attic with cooler air from the wind.

2. Mechanical
Mechanical ventilation is achieved with the use of electric fans attached to the roof. These fans constantly run, providing continuous fresh air to the attic space. These electric roof vents are ideal for homes with little to no wind exposure.

Both methods will increase the airflow through your attic and help to dispel any moisture buildup. Natural ventilation is the most common for homes, but if you live in an area without much wind and with high rainfall, you may want to talk to your pro about mechanical ventilation as well. When to hire help
Professionals can help you calculate how much ventilation you need, based on the size of the attic, then assess the necessary type of attic ventilation. They’ll also have experienced technicians who can implement a full suite of attic ventilation devices.

A general contractor can do this work, but first check their qualifications for experience with energy- or ventilation-related projects.

A full-service ventilation and insulation company is often your best bet. These companies address many projects, ranging from crawlspaces and attic insulation to air ducts, vapor barriers, attic fans, gable vents and fans, and turbines. As with the general contractor, ask questions and study the qualifications of the ventilation/insulation company. Not all companies deal with the entire range of projects.

With all mechanical ventilation devices, an electrician must install electric power in the attic. An electric permit will be required, too.
