Types of Pitched Roofing

When choosing a pitched roof, you’re not stuck with one option — there are numerous possibilities for creating a custom-tailored solution that meets each of your specific needs. Whether you’re considering replacing your existing pitched roof or adding something new, today’s blog post delves into the various pitched roofing systems available so you can decide what’s right for your home!

Pitched Roofing

Mono
It is the simplest form of pitched roof having a slope on one side only. One wall is raised sufficiently higher than the other to create the slope.

The roof consists of common rafters at the higher ends of which are supported on a wall plate. This wall plate is supported on a projecting corbel from the wall. This type of pitched roof can be used up to spans of 2.4 m. Source: DailyCivil

Double-pitch
This is the most widely used pitched roof, where the number of a sloping surface is two, that is, there are two sloping surfaces in the opposite direction. In other words, it is the combination of two mono-pitch roofs.

The rise of double pitch roof is the same as that of the mono-pitch roof, and its horizontal span is twice the value of the mono-pitch roof.

The structure of double pitch roof is similar to that of a quadrilateral triangle. The material used for this type of roof structure is a single set of principal ties, two sets of principal rafters, struts, angle purlins used to place the roof coverings. Source: CivilJungle

Couple
The simplest form of the pitched roof, the couple roof comprises two lengths of rafters leaning against each other, tied where they meet at the top.
A very limited span of approximately 3.5 m.
The downside of this roof is that the weight of it creates natural deflection in the supporting walls by pushing those outwards at the top. Walls could be reinforced but this would require extra brickwork and unnecessary expense. Source: CivilToday
