Types of Flashing

You may think that flashing only refers to the piece of metal or plastic found on your roof, but there are several other places where you can use it for protection against moisture coming into your home.

Chimney Flashing
Chimney flashing is a critical aspect of your roofing and chimney construction for wood burning and gas fireplaces and wood stoves. It provides a much-needed layer of protection against water infiltration around the chimney where the chimney construction creates a break or penetration in the solid surface of the roof. Flashing incorporates several layers of material, secured with specialized nails and caulking to create a tight, weatherproof seal. Source: AskTheBuilder

Window Flashing
While a home’s siding serves as its main source of protection against the elements, penetrations through the siding windows require additional waterproofing. Flashing—whether it’s on a window, roof, or chimney—is designed to be installed in a layered sequence, similar to the way shingles are layered on a roof. Each successive layer overlaps the layer below to direct the flow of water down and away. Deck Flashing
Whenever you are going to attach a deck or porch to the house, add a protective flashing between the house and the ledger board. You can buy flashing for decking in several forms and materials, or you can easily make your own by bending thin sheet metal.

Stainless Steel – Thin metal that can be easily bent.
Vinyl – When using vinyl siding for your home, you will usually use a form of vinyl flashing around the ledger boardand the edge of the vinyl.
Copper – When using copper flashing you will need to use copper nails, but this will hold up to the chemicals in the treated wood and finish products much better than other materials. Source: DoItYourself
