Signs That Your Roof Needs to be Replaced

The roof in our home provides us with shelter and protection from harsh weather like sun, rain, and snow. This thing can last for years – especially if proper maintenance is being done to it.

However, not all things last forever and the same principle applies to our roof. After a few years, it’s important that a thorough check-up is performed to ensure that no significant damage has occurred and that it remains sturdy enough to serve its purpose.

So, it’s important to look for these signs to see if it’s time for your roof to be fixed or replaced.

Roof Replacement

1. The Ceiling Is Sagging – A sagging ceiling may not appear to be much of an issue at first, but it could indicate a leak in the roof is causing moisture in the ceiling and has not been identified. A sagging ceiling may be touched by a hand or a broomstick: if it feels soft or has the consistency of soggy cardboard, it is most likely caused by excess moisture from a leak. A sagging ceiling should not be ignored until the leak becomes obvious and should get the attention of a professional as soon as possible. Source: Austin Roofing and Construction

2. Roof Leaks – Roof leaks are one of the most obvious signs your roof is on its way out. To check for roof leaks, go up to your attic regularly, preferably right after a rainfall. Look closely for any signs of water intrusion, as serious leaks in your home are most likely to originate here.
Checking the outside of your roof for ice dams is also crucial. Ice dams form when the snow of your roof melts, runs down to the eaves and freezes up again. As water continues to run down the roof and encounter the ice dam, it may begin to run under your shingles and possibly make its way into your home.
If the leaks are confined to a certain area on your roof, you may not need a complete roof replacement, but in any case, you should not hesitate to call a professional to inspect it. Putting off roof repairs may cause the problem to become more serious and require more extensive and costly repairs. Keep in mind that professional roofers tend to offer affordable roof inspections. 3. Your Shingles Are Curling, Buckling, or Missing – Look at the slopes of your home that get direct sunlight. If you notice the shingles are curling and buckling, it could mean they’re past their life expectancy. If most of your shingles are missing, looking worn, or warped, it’s time to replace the roof. But if the damage is contained to just a few, you can simply replace them.

It’s especially important to check your valleys, where the roof’s different slopes meet. As a vital part of your roof, they direct water runoff into gutters (instead of inside your walls). But valleys are prone to damage. If the shingles are falling apart or missing, your roof is susceptible to leaking.

Other places to inspect are the gutters and downspouts. If they’re filled with shingle granules, that’s a telltale sign the shingles are wearing out. Source: Angi
