Attic fans
Fans and vents may be installed on the roof system that will draw the air out of the attic space and exhaust it to the exterior. These fans may be controlled by a switch or a thermostat which detects heat build-up in the attic space and automatically exhausts the attic space. Ridge vents
Openings that run the entire length of your roof along the ridge—are often visible only to a trained eye. Hidden in plain sight and often camoflauged by specialty ridge shingles, these are a particularly popular means of ventilation because they create no disruption to the roofline. Installation of this type of attic ventilation involves leaving a gap in the sheathing along the ridge, and covering it with a perforated vent. Source: BobVila
Soffit vents
These vents are installed in eaves and soffits and are generally made of aluminum or PVC. They are great to help increase airflow through your attic and to help vent out moisture and hot air, especially if your home only has small vents on the roof. These vents allow air inside the attic to exit through the lowest location of the soffit and provide incredible ventilation and air movement when they are used in conjunction with ridge vents that run the entire length of the roof. Gable vents
Not surprisingly, gable vents are found in homes with gable roofs. Gables are the flat walls of the attic at right angles to the sloping ceiling/walls. The vents are installed directly in the siding near the roof. Source: DoItYourself
