Consequences of Poorly Installed Pavers

It can be disappointing when you walk into your paver patio or driveway and then notice that the surface is falling apart. This is the reason why the foundation is very important in any construction project you have for your home.

poorly installed pavers

So, once you see these tell-tale signs, you can easily tell that your pavers have been improperly installed:

1. Borders Falling Apart

Borders aren’t supported by other pavers, and when they’re poorly installed, they will be pushed into the surrounding landscape. Paver edges must be equipped with edge restraints, and pavers must be installed on a properly compacted base. Compaction must extend far enough beyond the project’s footprint to ensure that proper compaction will adequately support the border pavers.

2. Low Spots

Low spots mean that pavers have settled. This leads to puddling water and unsafe walking surfaces. If the base isn’t holding up as well as it should, it means the contractor didn’t take the time to compact the base properly. This can also occur if the wrong base materials are used, especially if the base contains too high a percentage of stone dust and fines. Proper materials and thorough compaction are the only ways to avoid low spots. Source: Watson Supply

3. Weed Growth in the Joints

Another common gripe that we hear about paver patios is that weeds can grow in the joints. However, the use of a special sand (called polymeric sand) in the joints will make a huge difference.

Polymeric sand is a fine sand that is combined with additives (usually silica) which, when mixed with water, forms a binding agent. Rather than loose sand, which weeds could grow through, this special sand will reduce the amount of weeds that break through.

However, if polymeric sand is not installed correctly, this can pose problems. We see a lot of full patio failures with incorrectly installed polymeric sand. If the specialized sand is installed wrong, it may not stay put, leaving nothing in your joints. This can lead to a patio full of weeds! Source: Earth, Turf, & Wood Inc.

4. Potholes

Driving over these on the road is a painful reminder that you should not allow them to be present in your installations. The major problem with potholes is that they allow water to accumulate and cause more damage. Replace and repair them right away.

5. Drainage Issues

Speaking of water, if you notice any water forming on, under, or around your pavers, you need to be alert. Seek professional help to determine the cause and replace whatever needs to go. Source: The Paver Company
