Checklist For Winterizing Your Roof

Winter is one of the harshest weathers we have because of the extreme temperatures that it brings. But thanks to the roof and walls of our house, we will have protection against the coldness.

In this article, we will be focusing on the roof, especially on how you can winterize it in preparation for the cold season. This will ensure that not only you’re prepared but also may prevent unexpected occurrences that could happen when the snow falls.

First things first, inspect your roof

The first activity to check off your list when preparing your roof for the winter season is the general inspection. Before you do anything else, it would be wise to go over your roofing system, check for damages, wear and tears and determine which parts need revamping or a total replacement.

Sometimes, your roof can be removed due to heavy winds and storms; these are some of the signs you should look out for while carrying out roof inspections. Other things you should check for include; pest damage, flashings/caulkings, the overall state of your attic, and other possible internal damages that might have gone unnoticed. Get your roof gutters cleaned

Your roof and roof gutters must be thoroughly cleaned before the arrival of winter. The growth of algae on your roof can seep under the shingles. This worsens during winter as freezing temperatures cause the algae to expand and expose your roof to damaging elements.

Rain gutters also play an integral role in maintaining your roofing system. A clogged or damaged rain gutter allows water to penetrate your roof, attic, and home, causing significant damage to your yard and even the foundation of your home.

Check the insulation of your attic

Insulation keeps your home warm during winter and cool during summer. It is imperative to keep a check on your attic’s insulation to ensure that it is in good shape. Any damp or moldy insulation must be removed to protect your roof. Adding insulation to your attic, when required, is a great way to save energy, improve comfort, and protect your roofing system. Check flashings

Roof Leaks can be obvious to the untrained eye, give your flashings a look. If there appears to be an area of water entry, around sections where the roof meets the wall, around skylights and vent penetrations, it’s better to be ahead of the upcoming rain and ask a professional to give a free estimate on your roof. In North kitsap, Poulsbo & Bainbridge Island, waterfront homes in high wind can push rain driven rain into flashings and create leaks. Source: Integrity
