Signs Your Water Line Needs a Repair or Replacement

If your water line has incurred any issues, it can often be difficult to find it right away since they’re usually buried underground. But it’s best that you anticipate it considering that they also deteriorate over time, and they also need some repair or replacement.

Water Line Problem

The best way for you to detect any water line issues is to spot any signs that could indicate it. At least with this, you can prepare to have it inspected by a professional and check what needs to be done. These are the signs that you need to lookout for:

1. Discolored water

Your water should be clear – always. If you turn on your faucet only to notice brownish and yellow colored water, then you may have a problem with your plumbing system. Usually this brown colored water in your pipes is a result of minerals, sediment, rust, or dirt. While this could indicate a problem with your water heater, it could also indicate a problem in your water line. When a water line breaks, it can cause the water in your home to become discolored. If you notice any discoloration in your water, make sure to have a professional take a look right away.

2. Rust and corrosion

If you live in an older home with old piping, such as those made from iron, you are prone to rust. To avoid this, it’s usually best that you replace your piping. Copper piping, for example, is much more resistant to corrosion and oxidation. If you have corroded plumbing, you’ll most likely notice a few signs such as: discolored water, bad or strange-tasting or smelling water, and/or poor or worsening water pressure. 3. Soggy lawn

As things heat up and dry out this summer, soggy spots on your lawn can be a huge indicator that your water line may be compromised. In the absence of rain, soggy spots on your lawn could indicate that your water line is cracked and leaking water into the soil. If you notice, random puddles, or an overly soggy lawn with no apparent cause, your waterline may be compromised.

4. Low water pressure

Low Water pressure in your home is always on the list of indicators for all sorts of plumbing problems, from clogged drains, to a damaged sewer line. Well guess what, you can add it to another list, because low water pressure is also an indicator that your waterline may be in disrepair. If you notice a sudden and significant drop in water pressure throughout your home or property, you should call a professional to check to see if your main water line is cracked or you water main is losing water. 5. Mold and mildew

Water leaks can lead to the formation of mold and mildew. This usually occurs due to a persistent, long-term leak. Mold and mildew aren’t just unsightly, they can cause health problems, including respiratory irritation, aggravate allergies, and cause issues for anyone who has asthma. If you do have a mold problem, contact your plumbing contractor to find and fix the leak. Any mold build up in your walls will have to be professionally remediated. The water leak can be anything from a leaky washer hose, water leaks in your basement, condensation from uninsulated pipes, or a leaky pipe. Aside from the plumbing repairs, and any necessary mold remediation, you’ll also need to replace any damaged flooring and drywall. Source: Mark Lindsay and Son Plumbing & Heating, Inc.
