Home Maintenance You Shouldn’t Neglect

As a homeowner, you could get so busy with a lot of stuff and things could easily fall through the crack. Keeping up with home maintenance can be difficult and you sometimes end up postponing those that are seemingly “minor” compared to the areas. Over time, you’d end up forgetting them, which will eventually become a major problem instead.

To ensure that you keep your home in tip-top shape, we have listed some of the home maintenance projects you shouldn’t forget.

Home Maintenance Projects

1. Check air conditioner drainage

A blocked condensate drain line could cause water to settle, developing mold. The mold spores can spread through the HVAC system, your ducts, and your indoor air. A blockage can reduce system efficiency or cause water to overflow, damaging the foundation and walls. Routine maintenance can increase your system’s efficiency and prevent expensive breakdowns or repairs.

2. Manage indoor air quality

Airborne contaminants such as mold, pollen, pet dander, bacteria, or viruses can lead to poor indoor air quality, harming your health. It’s important to wash, clean, or replace your air filters to ensure they can keep your air clean. If you or another person in your home experiences more allergic reactions, it’s time to call in the air quality experts to evaluate and talk to you about installing an air purification system. 3. Internal Damage

Neglecting maintenance to external areas of your house can lead to damage in hard-to-reach internal regions that you might overlook until too late. Shifted or damaged roof tiles can let water into the roof cavity, where damage from flooding to mould can occur. Similarly, damage to rain gutters around the roof’s edge can allow water to ingress, with blockage by debris an additional concern. After storms, it’s pertinent to inspect your roof for any potential damage and have the guttering cleaned yearly.

4. Overgrown Plants

Plants of all sizes can cause issues if they aren’t kept in check. Overhanging trees can cause damage to fences and buildings as they grow and limbs become heavy. Or storm damage can make branches prone to breaking and becoming hazardous. Whereas bushes growing by houses can obscure windows, making them a security risk if they block views. Keeping bushes trimmed reduces this risk and keeps the plants healthy and looking their best. Source: Less Stuff

5. Water Stains on Drywall

Anytime there are visible water stains on your drywall — even a small stain — it’s important to take action. Stains can appear on the walls for a number of reasons including a burst pipe or roof damage. If allowed to sit, water could cause mold to develop, rot wooden frames or damage the flooring of your home.

6. Roof

Problems with your roof can cause more than drywall damage. Small signs of trouble can turn into major issues if left unattended to. For example, damages to the roof from wind, rain or flying debris could deteriorate the roof and compromise its integrity. Excess moisture collected by moss or algae could cause mildew and rot in your home’s ceiling, insulation and even electrical systems. Source: First Quality Roofing
