4 Ways to Add Shade to Your Deck

It’s fun to stay outside during the summer, but prolonged sun exposure is not good for you. Lounge on your deck without worrying about a sunburn by using any of the following:

Vertical Garden
Even if you have a brown thumb, you can create a gorgeous living wall using easy-to-care-for fabric pocket planters. Hang a group of them on a deck or patio, and voila! Your average outdoor space is now a lush, secluded oasis. Source: HGTV

Umbrella
Sometimes your budget or space do not permit building a shade structure. Umbrellas have been around for a long time and aren’t going away anytime soon. Find a sturdy one from a reliable source, measure your space to ensure it will fit, and know what to look for when shopping for a good outdoor umbrella. Source: TheSpruce

Awning
A retractable awning attached to the house is an attractive option for many people. It provides ready access to shade when you want it and retracts to let the sun shine in when you’re ready for it. It can also block glare into an adjoining room of the house.

Need to know: The installation can be an easy DIY activity, or it can be an involved project that requires calling an awning contractor. The difficulty depends on the size of the awning, whether it’s retracted with a hand crank or an electric motor, whether the awning is located above a door and the height of the awning above the patio or deck.

Remember, depending on the awning’s size and location, headroom may be limited near its forward edge. And retract awnings if severe weather is in the forecast to spare them from wind damage. Source: PopularMechanics

Shade Sail
Shade sails are triangular or square pieces of high-strength nylon that you suspend over your patio, adding color, pattern, and plenty of shade. The sails require connections to posts, trees, or rigid structural members of your house, such as exposed rafter ends. Source: HouseLogic
