Invest in high-quality fasteners
Trying to save money with low-quality screws is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when building a deck. Low-quality screws will corrode, discoloring your deck and shortening its life, particularly with pressure-treated wood. (Even if your decking is not pressure-treated, it will be attached to pressure-treated beams and joists.) When old decks get rickety, it’s often due to failing fasteners, not the wood.
Stainless-steel or coated screws, specifically made for pressure-treated wood, will resist corrosion and extend your deck’s life. Electroplate-galvanized screws, though widely used, are not acceptable for decks. Source: BHG

Wood, either treated or naturally weather- and insect-resistant, is what is traditionally thought of for deck materials. However, composite decking is making inroads into deck building. The initial cost is higher, but over time you can actually save money when compared to cleaning, refinishing and ultimately replacing wood deck boards. Some warranties are up to 20 years or more. Follow building code
Sure, getting a permit can be a pain and cost some money – not a lot of money, relatively speaking, as most permit fees I see are under $200 – but it’s definitely worth it. Most cities and towns have a qualified engineer or certified plan reviewer on staff to review your building plans. They’re usually familiar with the best practices and latest code requirements, and they’re usually happy to share their knowledge with you.
Show them a basic drawing with dimensions and they will usually help you fill in the details. Making sure you use the correct beam, joist, post and footing sizes, along with the correct fasteners and hangers is their job and specialty.
