3 Tips to Prevent Drainage Problems

There are some basic ways to avoid drainage problems and prevent minor problems from developing into major ones. This short post will cover some tips to prevent drainage problems, such as: cleaning, venting and hiring a professional.

Below are 3 tips to prevent drainage problems:

Cleaning
You should clean your drains regularly. A good way of doing this is to fill your sinks with hot water and then pull the plug. The hot water will run down the drains and help to remove any build up that might be there.  If you notice that your drains are clearing slower than usual, you can use a commercial drain cleaning product such as those available from supermarkets but follow the instructions exactly and only use them as absolutely needed. Source: HomeImprovementPages

Venting
Venting allows air to enter the pipe as water drains away. Think of what happens when you put a straw into a glass of water. If you cover the open end of the straw with your finger, you prevent air from entering the straw and that creates a vacuum. When you lift straw out of the glass, the water won’t drain from the straw until you lift your finger. When enough air is entering the vent, then water and waste will drain properly. Your toilet, for example, will swirl and empty quickly when it’s flushed. However, if the venting doesn’t let enough air in, then you might hear the sink gurgle when you flush the toilet. Also, remember that venting allows sewer gases to escape and prevents them from building to dangerous levels inside your home. Source: DirectEnergy

Hiring a Professional
Damp, musty smells and wet walls are signs that water is getting into your basement or crawl space. Don’t ignore the problem or attempt a quick-and-dirty solution that won’t correct the situation long-term. Certain temporary fixes can actually make the problem worse.
Luckily, there are do-it-yourself drainage kits available, such as Flo-Well and EZ-Drain, which are usually better performing and easier to install than a traditional, gravel dry well or French drain. However, when dealing with more complex drainage issues, consider hiring a contractor.
