3 Steps in Installing Drain Tiles

Drain tiles are not particularly easy to install. Thus, it is always a good idea to consult with a professional to be sure of the best course of action. Below are 3 guide steps in installing drain tiles. Click here for details on our drain tile services!

Step 1: Dig to The Footer and Lay Your Drain Tile
I rented a trencher capable of digging a 9″x2 1/2″ trench for $50 bucks.  Sorry, no pics of this, but it was a walk behind (or pull, rather) gas powered unit with a large disk blade.  I made two passes of 70′ each in opposite directions about a foot apart.  This let the machine throw the excess dirt out of the digging area for use later.
I then would use a trench shovel (flat and narrow) to dig underneath the sod and removed it in 3-4′ sections to replace later atop the tiled area.  Then, using a spade I dug out the middle of the trench by hand and placed that in a mound that I later removed from the site. Source: Instructables

Step 2: Lay Your Gravel Cover
Shape the bottom of the trench so that the string rests gently on top of the soil over the entire trench.
Line the trench with filter fabric or landscape cloth so that it covers the bottom and extends at least 18 inches up each side of the trench.
Lay the perforated drainpipe or tile in the bottom of the trench. Ensure it is centered in the trench with its perforations oriented horizontally. Source: Homeguides.sfgate

Step 3: Water Outlet
The water that drains into your system will need some place to go. If installing your drainage system, yourself, your best bet is to continue your drainage pipe away from your house and to a surface location. However, this only works if you live on a hill, since it relies on gravity to move the water.
Your other option is to install a sump pump in your basement. A sump pump is a hole in your floor leading several feet below the foundation with a machine to pump the water out. Let your drainage pipe lead to the sump pump for a water outlet. Source: Doityourself
