3 Common Types of Roofing Materials

There are many different types of roofing materials available which varies in material, style, color and cost. Here are 3 of most popular roofing materials, such as: asphalt shingles, metal roofing and slate shingles.

Asphalt Shingles

The roofing material we all see the most of these days — the one that covers the roofs of a great majority of houses across America — is the standard three-tab asphalt shingle. One of the least-expensive roofing options, asphalt shingles are available in a dozen or so different colors both solid and blended. The shingle products being made today are usually guaranteed for 20, or in some cases 30 years, making them an excellent value. Value is the principal advantage of this roofing material, which explains it’s commonality.  Source: Thisoldhouse

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are resistant to extreme weather conditions. Available in two types, panels and shingles, metal roofs come in aluminum, copper, stainless steel and zinc.

– Pros: Metal roofing is durable, lasts longer than asphalt or wood, and offers high solar reflectance.
– Cons: Metal roofing is relatively expensive.
– House Styles: Metal looks great on bungalows, cabins, contemporary and cottage-style homes.
– Cost and Life Span: Prices usually start around $100 to $300 a square, but some styles can cost $600 to $800 a square. Metal roofing can last 40 to 75 years. Source: Hgtv

Slate Shingles

A slate roof is for the dedicated home remodeler who will accept nothing less (not even rubber “slate” that looks amazingly like real slate).  Slate is real stone.  Fortunately, slate has a tendency to cleave off in thin sheets, making it easy to quarry.  Slate is best installed only be highly qualified installers of slate–who can be hard to find, especially west of the Mississippi.  One DIY slate installer did his roof (2,240 sq. ft.) for about $15,000.  But remember, that was do it yourself and he only managed to install about 100 sq. ft. per day.  Source: Homerenovations.about.com
