3 Common Mistakes in Installing Drainage Pipes

Thinking about installing drainage pipes on your own? If so, you will want to consider these 3 common mistakes in installing drainage pipes, including: inconsistent pipe level, installing dishwasher without air gap fitting and unvented traps.

Inconsistent Pipe Levels

Another common mistake you should avoid is to install your pipe at inconsistent levels. You don’t want any dips or portions of the drain that will have to travel uphill, even at the slightest grade. This will lead to slow water drainage and possible backups, breaks and pooling. You also want to make sure there are no sharp turns in the design of your drainage system, as this will cause problems regarding the proper flow of your water. Source: DoItYourself

Installing Dishwasher without Air Gap Fitting

No domestic dishwasher shall be directly connected to drainage system or food disposer without the use of an approved dishwasher air gap fitting on the discharge side of the dishwasher. Air gaps shall be installed above the flood level of sink or drain boards whichever is higher. Source: CoLincolnWaUs

Unvented Traps

Drain traps provide a barrier between living spaces and your sewer system. They keep vermin and explosive methane gas from entering your home. However, many DIY plumbers don’t understand how a proper trap should work. When remodeling a bathroom or kitchen, some Atlanta homeowners put in what is commonly called an S-trap in a sink drain line. These traps are basically two traps connected to look like an “S.” Source: CoolRay
