3 Common Cause of Roofing Problems

Roof problems are always a pain and undoubtedly a significant expense. However, knowing some common cause of roofing problems can save you more time and money.

Here are 3 common cause of roofing problems:

Storm Damage
Hail and high winds can wreck your roofing system. Look for signs of storm damage once the weather calms down. Check for missing shingles, fascia and the condition of exhaust pipes, valleys and outer edges. Also inspect your attic for leaks. Keep in mind, some damage may not be visible and require a roofer’s expertise to spot.

If a storm knocks a tree down onto your home, safely evacuate until a roofing contractor can assess the structural damage and perform emergency repairs. Also put a call into your homeowner’s insurance agent so he or she can determine if you should file a claim. Take pictures of the damage and keep receipts of any work you perform yourself, like covering a hole in the roof. Source: Angieslist

Clogged or Broken Gutters
What Does It Look Like: You may be able to see the leaves sticking out of the gutter when you look up onto your roof? But, if not, you should notice the lack of water trickling out of a downspout during a rainstorm.

Why It Happens: Your gutters are meant to help water travel away from the roof. When a blockage forms and they get clogged, that travel stops. Rainwater will then pool in one area of the roof and have more of an opportunity to seep through cracks.

How to Fix It: Sorry, there’s no easy answer to this one. Get up on a ladder, and get in there with your hands. Many recommend placing a large tarp underneath the area where you are working. That way, you can drop any debris as you go and wrap it up for easy disposal later. Source: Freshome

Lack Maintenance
Lack of roof maintenance is probably a roof’s worst enemy. Many problems start out as minor, such as the need to remove overhanging tree limbs or cleaning backed up gutters. But when not corrected these problems can create serious damage. Routine inspection and maintenance can extend the life of your roof and that can save you a lot of money. Source: Enlightenme
